According to the National Retail Federation’s 2009 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, the economy will once again largely influence this year’s holiday shopping season. The survey, conducted by BIGresearch, had major findings relating to consumers and retailers. For consumers, the survey found that they intend to be bargain hunters this year. For retailers, the survey revealed that they have cut back tremendously on their inventory due to weak demand.

In addition to the survey, Phil Rist of BIGresearch and Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation collected the top 10 trends for this year’s shopping season. Reporter Abby Johnson breaks down the first 5 in this SmallBusinessNewz report. They are:

1. Americans aren’t ready to declare an end to the recession.
2. It’s all about the economy.
3. Sales and promotions are king.
4. Pay attention to payment methods.
5. It’s the thought that counts.
